The nation’s first online audit of Medicines Use Reviews (MURs) is being launched tomorrow to enable Primary Care Organisations and pharmacists to review how effective MURs are. The project is a partnership between the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB), the Royal College of General Practitioners and the Clinical Audit Support Centre Limited.

Research led by The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy has found that medication prescribers correctly identified fewer than half of drug pairs with potentially dangerous drug-drug interactions. These findings raise concern because of the high number of drugs Americans take: an average of 2.3 medications is prescribed during each physician office visit.

“The Senate dealt a blow to the drug lobby Thursday by voting to permit people in the United States to order lower-cost drugs from Canada over the Internet,” the Associated Press/Arizona Republic reports. The drugs in question are often made in the U.S., and then sold abroad for lower prices than at home because because of government policies in many other countries.

NHS Employers has today released an England-wide guide to help primary care trusts (PCTs) produce ‘pharmaceutical needs assessments’ (PNAs). NHS Employers supports the Department of Health in its drive for more PCTs to develop and update their PNAs, which aim to help enhance the commissioning of quality pharmaceutical services, and this new guide will help make the complex process of producing PNAs more manageable.

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society is backing the Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists (GHP) bid to get the Government to review its decision on the recruitment and retention premium of pharmacists in hospitals and PCTs. The Pay Review Body last week recommended that band 6 and 7 pharmacists in these areas should receive the recruitment and retention premium (RRP) from October this year, but the Government has rejected this recommendation.
