The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain is urging older people to review the medication they are taking, as new research released by the Society reveals how millions of over 65s in Britain are taking a cocktail of medicines without fully understanding what they are, or the side effects they may be suffering from. The research shows how almost 4 out of 10 (38%) over 65s in Britain are currently taking over five medicines at any one time.

It seems like common sense that an information leaflet for vision loss would have large print and appropriate contrast, but that’s not the case a new study done at the University of Alberta has found. Cheryl Sadowski, from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and pharmacy student Adriana Chubaty, looked at 388 leaflets from pharmacies and clinics in Edmonton and surrounding area, to see if they followed the guidelines from Britain, the United States and Canada.

An ongoing disagreement between Delaware’s Medicaid program and Walgreen Co. over how much the state-run health program will pay for drugs will not leave low-income beneficiaries without access to medications yet, though if an accord isn’t reached, the pharmacy company says it will stop filling prescriptions on Aug. 11, Reuters reports.

AlburtyLab released a report on its comprehensive evaluation of health risks for workers in pharmacies using air pressure-activated drug dispensing machines. The study tested pharmacy workers wearing personal exposure monitors (PEMs) while using the two leading types of air pressure-activated dispensing technologies - the McKesson/Parata Max and the McKesson/Parata RDS. This is the third major study conducted by AlburtyLab examining the issues relating to pharmacy worker exposure.

Prescribers treating patients who have had total hip or knee replacement surgery can access an independent review of the oral anticoagulant rivaroxaban (Xarelto) in the August issue of NPS RADAR. NPS RADAR provides independent information about new medicines and changes to PBS listings to health professionals and is published to coincide with PBS updates, giving health professionals access to information when they need it.

New research released by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) reveals how older people are taking a cocktail of medicine without fully understanding what they are or the side effects they are causing. The RPSGB survey shows that nearly half (43%) of over 65’s are currently taking over five medicines at any one time. However, one in five admits to not always taking the medicine as prescribed.
