The announcement by the National Drugs and Poisons Schedule Committee to implement major changes to the scheduling of medications containing codeine is disappointing and could place barriers in the way of legitimate consumers, the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia says. President of the PSA, Warwick Plunkett, said the rescheduling of many products containing codeine and reducing pack sizes could present more problems than it sought to address.

A suggestion that the implementation of e-health infrastructure across Australia be funded from the Health and Hospitals Fund has been supported by the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia. Chairman of the Health and Hospitals Fund’s advisory board, Bill Ferris, was reported as saying the country’s e-health ambitions could be funded form the remaining $1.8 billion in the Health and Hospitals Fund.

BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: BPAX), announced positive safety data yesterday in its ongoing LibiGel Phase III clinical development program. BioSante reported that with over 1,250 women enrolled and almost 825 women-years of exposure in its LibiGel Phase III clinical development program, there have been no deaths and only five cardiovascular events. This analysis of blinded data indicates a very low cardiovascular event rate has occurred thus far.

AMA President, Dr Andrew Pesce, said today that a partnership between a pharmacy chain and nurse practitioners to open 150 walk-in clinics poses a serious threat to the quality and safety of health care in Australia. It is reported that the Perth-based Revive nurse clinics and the Pharmacy Alliance group plan to open more than 150 clinics nationally by 2012.

Emory University’s Chemical Biology Discovery Center has been selected by SAIC-Frederick, Inc. (SAIC-F) to be part of an 11-member national consortium aimed at accelerating the discovery and development of new and innovative, targeted cancer therapies. SAIC-F is the prime contractor to the National Cancer Institute at Frederick (NCI-Frederick).

The labeling information that comes with prescription drugs tells you what’s known about the medication, but researchers from the Stanford University School of Medicine think it’s high time that the labeling tell you what isn’t known. The researchers want the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to require drug manufacturers to state how new medications compare with similar, existing treatments.
