Jackson Health System notified Miami-Dade County officials on Tuesday that it plans to lay off 1,115 workers, or about 10 percent of its employees.
The public health system, which operates Florida’s largest hospital, hopes to save $69 million a year by removing those employees. Of those positions, 920 are currently filled and 195 have been vacated since December, JHS President and CEO Carlos A. Migoya wrote in a letter to county officials. Dr. Lauren McDonald, chairwoman of the board of managers of Parkland Memorial Hospital, announced Tuesday that she is resigning from the board, effective March 6.
McDonald, a nephrologist, was appointed in 1999 by County Commissioner John Wiley Price.
McDonald announced her resignation at the end of Tuesday’s board meeting. The board’s scheduled election of officers was postponed until March.

In a conference call with analysts today, Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp. CEO Jonah Shacknai said the Scottsdale company is reaching out to pediatricians, securing contracts with managed care organizations and kicking off a prescription-assistance program to continue to generate revenue.
The company reported an increase in income and revenue for the year-ended Dec. 31, 2011, compared with the previous year in its earnings statement released Monday.

Hawaii is the healthiest state in the nation, according to data from The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, which found that adult obesity in the United States may be slowly declining.
The data found that Hawaii led the nation with the highest well-being index score of 70.2 percent in 2011. The Aloha State scored the highest for emotional health with an 84.1, and for healthy behaviors with a score of 68.9.
