How does our biological system know that it is supposed to operate on a 24-hour cycle? Scientists at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have discovered that a tiny molecule holds the clue to the mystery. Human as well as most living organisms on earth possess circadian a (24-hour) life rhythm. This rhythm is generated from an internal clock that is located in the brain and regulates many bodily functions, including the sleep-wake cycle and eating.

The copper sequestering drug tetrathiomolybdate (TM) has been shown in studies to be effective in the treatment of Wilson disease, a disease caused by an overload of copper, and certain metastatic cancers. That much is known. Very little, however, is known about how the drug works at the molecular level. A new study led by Northwestern University researchers now has provided an invaluable clue: the three-dimensional structure of TM bound to copper-loaded metallochaperones.

Two Kent State University assistant professors recently received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to continue research beneficial to understanding the environment. December 1 marks the 21st anniversary of “World AIDS Day” a global awareness campaign that originated at the 1988 World Summit of Ministers of Health on Programmes for AIDS Prevention.

A panel of leading European diabetes experts led by Professor Oliver Schnell from the Diabetes Research Institute in Munich has published a “Consensus Statement A European perspective” (1) on the benefits of self-monitoring of blood glucose values (SMBG). It recommends performing SMBG for all types of diabetes treatment approaches in order to achieve proper glucose control and values which are close to normal, without increasing the risk of hypoglycaemia.

Novartis has gained exclusive rights to two oral targeted investigational therapies for patients with a range of life-threatening blood disorders and cancers that currently do not have effective treatment options. Under a licensing agreement with Incyte Corporation, Novartis will have responsibility for the future development of Incyte’s investigational JAK inhibitor outside the US and for future development of an early-stage cmet inhibitor globally.
