Goddard faults budget deal

In what could be one of the first of many volleys in the 2010 governor’s race, Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard slammed a possible budget deal between Gov. Jan Brewer and Republican legislative leaders.

  • The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain has published its fourth Pharmacy Workforce Census, reflecting the working patterns of pharmacists registered in August 2008. The reports findings reveal changes in workforce patterns since the last census in 2005, together with new and emerging trends in the workforce. Census forms were sent out to all pharmacists with a registered address in Great Britain. The survey achieved a high response rate of 69.6%.

Rather than settling for just one of these, researchers at the University of Washington have combined two nanoparticles in one tiny package. The result is the first structure that creates a multipurpose nanotechnology tool for medical imaging and therapy.

The new research results are being presented at the 2009 annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior (SSIB), July 28 - August 1, 2009, the foremost society for research into all aspects of eating and drinking behavior.   • Government health officials from 13 African countries today launched the first-ever push for accreditation of the continent’s medical laboratories, starting a process that the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Government believe will be an historic step to strengthen health systems and lead to better care for patients. Just a handful of Africa’s laboratories are now accredited, in part because the existing international accreditation process is so time-consuming.

  • Research to be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior (SSIB), July 28 - August 1, 2009, the foremost society for research into all aspects of eating and drinking behavior, shows that exposing rats to a context associated with eating chocolate activates a part of the brain’s reward system known as the orexin system. This finding helps explain why eating can be triggered by environmental cues even in the absence of hunger.
